JJK Gurukulam

JJK Gurukulam

A Gurukulam is a place where a teacher and students live together and learn the scriptures. Guru means ‘teacher’, Kulam means ‘home’.

jjkIn ancient India the custom was that when a child becomes 7 or 8 years old, he stayed with the Guru master/teacher) for 12 years and learned the scriptures. It has been proved now that this is the best system to impart knowledge to a child. Such a tradition is being maintained in our Gurukulam.

JJK Gurukulam was inaugurated on 16th April 2006 by Swami Dayananda Saraswati in the presence of Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma (present titular Maharaja of Travancore and head of the Travancore Royal Family). The land and building were generously donated by Vasanti Jayaswal,  a devotee of Swami Dayananda.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the world renowned traditional teacher of Vedanta philosophy, is the founder of this care home. It’s one of the rarest places where teaching of Yoga, Vedanta and Sanskrit takes place.

We select children who come from poor families where often father or mother or both are missing or in such distress that the family is unable to give the necessary care and proper education to the child. In addition to shelter, clothes, books and food (vegetarian) we are providing value based education. The children are sent to the Public school nearby.

The daily schedule in the Gurukulam includes:  Yoga class, Vishnusahasranamam chanting, studies of Sanskrit, Bhagavad Gita, Lalita Sahasranamam and other Vedic chanting like Purusha suktam and Sri suktam.

Due to the importance of English language, we have taken special care to provide English tuition so that the children are able to read, write and communicate in English. The children have regular contact with their families. They spend school holidays in their homes.
